Boat Refugee Foundation is looking into the possibility of starting a dental mission in Moria Refugee Camp in Lesvos. In Moria there is a great need for acute dental care, with 5-10% of our patients (daily 5-10 patients) presenting with dental problems (e.g. large dental holes, dental infections, septic shock from dental abscesses). There has never been a dentist in Moria and only in exceptions we are able to refer these patients to a local public dentist. Currently, our dental cases only receive analgesics and antibiotics, causing the problems and the severe discomfort to persist.
After discussions with the president of the Dental Association Lesvos and with the camp management of Moria, we are planning on starting a dental mission of 4 weeks in Moria to provide acute dental care. From 9.00h-16.00h two dentists with their dental assistants can work in their own room in our medical cabin to provide acute dental care. We have received a donation of dental material from a foundation specialized in this kind of missions, which is specifically put together for this dental mission, including adequate sterilization techniques. The time frame we are looking at is somewhere in September-November 2016.
Are you an experienced dentist and/or dental assistant, or do you know of any, and are you interested in helping the refugees of Moria on this dental mission? Please contact Jelmer Kooistra, the medical coordinator on Lesvos, on
for more details.
